The Virden History Mural attached to the Sav Mor Pharmacy located on Historic Route 66 (Rt4 ) has become battered and worn in the 14 years since its installation. A few panels had to be removed for the safety of passersby. A group of concerned business people and volunteer citizens have undertaken the mission of a restored or new mural. Mural artists Gigi Maynerick and Bernie and D.L. Gietl evaluated the mural which was painted on metal panels and backed with plywood and determined that the mural is beyond restoration. The Gietls have been contracted to paint a new historic mural directly on the brick wall.
The mural is now in the design phase and a sketch will be unveiled to the public during the Virden Country Christmas December 2, 2017 at 11:30, Virden Community Center. Fund raising will formally begin at that time.
Completion of the mural is projected for early summer so it can be showcased at the Miners, Mobsters and Mother Road event.
